Privacy policy

Savely collects nothing

This policy covers the Savely browser extension for Chrome, Chromium-based browsers and Firefox, and this website.

The short version

Savely does not collect, store, sell or share any personal data. There is no Savely account and no Savely server. Everything you save stays in your own browser unless you choose to export it or turn on sync to a location you control.

What the extension stores, and where

When you save a page, Savely stores the following locally, in your browser's own storage (IndexedDB):

  • the page address, title, author, site name and an excerpt;
  • the cleaned-up article text;
  • the site's icon, stored once per site so your list never has to download it again;
  • the tags, favorites, archive state, highlights and notes you add;
  • your reader preferences (text size, typeface, column width, theme).

Reader preferences may be synced between your own browsers by the browser itself (for example Chrome Sync or Firefox Sync) if you have that turned on. That is a feature of your browser, governed by your browser vendor's policy. Savely never sees it.

When the extension uses the network

Savely makes network requests only as a direct result of something you do:

  1. Saving a page. When you save the page you're on, Savely reads it from the open tab. When you save a link without opening it, Savely downloads that page to extract the article. Savely also fetches that site's icon, once per site. Either way, the requests go to the site you're saving (and wherever it hosts its icon), never to us.
  2. Showing images in the reader. Article images load from the original site. You can switch this off in the reader ("Don't load remote images").
  3. Optional sync. If, and only if, you connect a GitHub account in the options, Savely reads and writes a private Gist on your GitHub account using the token you provide. The token is kept in local extension storage on that device only. Sync data in a private Gist is not publicly listed but is not end-to-end encrypted; GitHub's own privacy policy applies to it.

Savely contains no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting and no advertising, and loads no remote code, fonts or scripts.

Permissions

  • Active tab and scripting: to read the article from the tab you ask it to save.
  • Storage and unlimited storage: to keep your articles in your browser.
  • Context menus: for "Save to Savely" on the right-click menu.
  • Notifications: to tell you whether a save worked.
  • Alarms: for the daily local backup and the optional sync schedule.
  • Downloads: to save the export files you ask for.
  • Access to all websites (optional, asked when needed): only to download a link you save without opening it.
  • Access to api.github.com (optional, asked when needed): only if you turn on sync.

Deleting your data

Uninstalling Savely removes everything it stored in your browser. You can also erase all data from the Savely options page at any time. Exports you downloaded and a sync Gist you created are yours and stay where you put them.

This website

This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics or third-party scripts. It is hosted on Netlify, which, like any web host, processes standard request information such as IP addresses to serve pages and protect against abuse. See Netlify's privacy policy.

Children

Savely is a general-audience tool and does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. Because Savely has no way to contact you and holds no data about you, a change can never apply retroactively to data we don't have.
